Original fossil of a mesosaur, Stereosternum tumidum, from Permian age deposits of the Irati Formation, in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The length of the skull of this specimen is 6.0cm. Mesosaurs were freshwater crocodile-like reptiles that lived during the early Permian (between 286 and 258 million years ago), are found solely in Southern Africa and Eastern South America. It would have been physiologically impossible for mesosaurs to swim between the continents. This suggests that South America and Africa were joined during the Early Permian, forming the Gondwana supercontinent. This specimen is in the collection of the Black HIlls Institute of Geological Research, photographed with written permission for commercial educational use.
